2 Classic Surf Films - Big Wednesday & Endless Summer

I decided to post the large version of these picture because they are so iconic for me in my own personal surfing history. I am not a long boarder but I can't imagine any surfer not liking these movies. I remember seeing these posters in my friend's beach house in San Clemente when I was around 6 years old, his dad was a surfer, and we would always want to watch these movies. I fell in love with the movies and in-turn, I fell in love with surfing. I can't think of many things are better than catching a wave. Now many years have passed and surfing movies have progressed as well as the sport but my argument here is; that doesn't mean that surfing has to lose it's soul. Just like most everything else out there that we have used to define ourselves artistically and express ourselves, surfing has also become something that makes money and is a marketing tool. As you may know by now, my goal with the BeatLife philosophy is to take us back to when things were more pure and innocent. It seems to me now that there is a price attached to everything and that is stripping our culture away from it's soul and originality. It is pretty evident to me that this has a indirect effect on the economy and the perception the world has about America. When we were creating art like this, the rest of the world marveled and did everything they could to duplicate. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery and our culture was spreading like wild fire up until about 10 years ago. It has now hit a stagnant point with the lack of creativity and we are suffering as a nation. Technology is great but it is also killing the motivation to be creative the way we used to be. Like I have always said, this is just my opinion and I am trying to use this medium to spread my philosophy to maybe one person who could really make a difference. It's movies like these that have soul that really stand the test of time. Watch & Enjoy!

3 Badass Martial Arts Movies Featuring Tony Ja - Ong Bak 1,2, & 3

Ok, I know you could go out and rent these movies or even find them online to watch, but where can you find all 3 in the same place and watch other cool videos that pretty much define a counter culture? Only here because I am the one controlling this cool content that all has to do with my BeatLife philosophy. As you may have noticed, I love Martial arts and before I started practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I was training Muay Thai Boxing. I love Muay Thai and I do want to train in Thailand at some point. Tony Ja is one fighter who got me interested in Muay Thai, this guy is amazing. Ong Bak was the first film I saw with him and I was captivated. It takes place in modern day Thailand where he is forced to fight to save his village. Tony Ja basically introduces the world to his style of classic Muay Thai. Ong Bak 2 is a little different because it takes place during Feudal times and Tony starts to show that he is exceptionally versed in many styles of martial arts. In one fight scene alone I see him demonstrate skills in Samurai sword, many different Kung Fu styles, drunken boxing, Muay Thai & Jui Jitsu. Throughout the movie he shows how much more skilled he is than many others and that is why this is one of my favorite Martial Arts movies. I haven't actually seen part 3 but I am going to watch it after I post this. I have it in my netflix queque but once I found it online here, I felt it would only make sense to include it with the other 2 so we call can enjoy them. Another State of Mind : A Punk Documentary

Well I haven't see this one in years but it is awesome! This classic 1982 Documentary follows 2 bands in their early punk years. I know many of you have heard of Social Distortion but there is also Youth Brigade , who are kings of the old punk era and Minor Threat who also make their way into the picture. If you like music at all, you should watch this and see the progression their music has made, especially Social Distortion. This definitely fits into the Beatlife philosophy as I try to spread the belief that we need to go back to this cultural belief system...once again, through a documentary. From Wikipedia :

Well since I haven't been blogging as much I will give you guys who like this 2 more videos from my day. Both of these I can say were very influential in my skateboarding and taste in music bridging the gap between Punk & Hip Hop. What I love most about skateboarding back in these times was the lifestyle that it reflected, a pure form of self expression. We didn't have many skate parks and were not considered "cool".We even used to get arrested just for riding. Now we have huge skate contest's in arenas and the pros make millions of dollars with ego problems. Hey I guess that's what happens with everything right. But at least we can look back upon these with fond memories. Check these 2 out; 20 shot Sequence is a collection of guys from Blind, menace, 101 and World Industries. This video opened me up to Wu Tang Clan and Hieroglyphics. Let the horns blow is just a short sick video by Mad Circle where they really focused on the art of the Film mixing and matching the music to each skateboarder. I used to watch both of these videos all the time in high school and really model my style after these guys. Hope you guys think they are as cool as I do...if not, too bad, it's my blog. hahaha. Ok, so it's been a while since I last blogged on here but it's because I have been training like crazy in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Moreover, specifically Gracie Barra, which is a branch of the Gracie Family. As I prepare for my first tournament ever, and really my first true organized fight, I realize that along with all my physical training, I also need to train my mind and focus on the task at hand. A very interesting tip from my World Champion Professor, Flavio Almeida, was that you need to learn how to focus your adrenaline. This is because right before the fight you can spend it all really quickly , become very tired and get beat. This documentary is a little older but it features Rickson Gracie which is considered one of the best Jiu Jitsu artists' of all time, if not The Best. He goes over his preparation for the tournament and shows why he is so grounded and ready when the time comes. If you are a fighter of any type, I suggest you watch this. Either way though, once you start training Jiu Jitsu, it will change your life. This definitely fits the "BeatLife" mold because this lifestyle does not allow for life to kick your ass. A funny fact about Rickson, he will never tell you his age. It is just a number to him...Maybe that's why his relatives all live into their 90's. Watch and Enjoy!

I have to post this video because it seems that a majority of my followers like the old school skate videos. I have to give a "Big Up" to my viewers in Slovenia, Russia, Germany and South Korea. Jimi Hendrix Tribute - 2 Documentaries

I have to say the Jimi Hendrix is probably the best Guitar Player to ever pick up the instrument. Being left handed and poor he would re-string a right handed Fendor Stratocaster and play it upside down. The sound that Jimi created is one that can never be replicated and only he knows what was going on in his mind when he painted his images with his guitar. He was obviously a troubled soul as he died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27 but his music will live for many years to come. It's hard to imagine someone saying that they are not a fan but even so, his story is very interesting. In a time when music was the voice of a nation, Jimi was a major proponent of the era. Although he only lived a very short life he continues to intrigue people and change their lives. From T-shirts to posters and re-released albums the Jimi Hendrix foundation continues to thrive. He is still one of my most favorite musicians and I just wanted to share a little of his story with you. Great Oldschool Skate video : Acme Skateboard Video

I don't remember this video being only 12 mins long but I always though it was really cool. Filmed in 1992, it is the classic definition of the transition from "Old school" to "New School" skateboarding. I always thought it was funny because you just don't see many videos from Acme, yet they have been around for about 20 years. If you have some time and you like old skate vids, then you will enjoy this one. It takes me back to when Skateboarding wasn't "The cool thing to do". I remember I had 2 stickers I loved, they said : Skateboarding is not a Crime & If Skateboarding is going to be outlawed then only outlaws can be Skateboarders. I still think it's funny, man I love this stuff...Watch and Enjoy!

And You Don't Stop: 30 years of Hip Hop (Parts 1 &2)

I have to inundate all of you with REAL Hip Hop here one more time because all of this Eminem coverage is just a little too much for me. I have to say, I did like his first album but then after that he just got old to me. He is a great lyricist but Hip Hop embodies a lot more than that. Now he might be Hip Hop as a person inside but not so much his music anymore. If you have been following this blog closely by now then you might have a much better understanding of the culture a little more and why I do think this way. This next one I have to show you, And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip Hop, was done by VH1 in 2004 as a 5 part series. Unfortunately, I could only get parts 1 & 2 but I will continue to look for the other three. This is the important one anyway as it shows the very beginning. It is important for all of us to learn the real history of anything if we are going to appreciate it. This is a very cool movie, watch when you have a chance. 2 More Music Documentaries : The Hip Hop Project & Once Upon a Time in New York: The Birth of Hip Hop, Disco & Punk

Staying true to the BeatLife theme I wanted to follow up yesterday's post's of films from over 10 years ago to some newer films made just a few years ago. I have only seen both of these one time each but they both were very well done in my opinion. The Hip Hop Project was made in 2006 and is an inspirational story about a homeless kid who uses hip hop to change his life, I would recommend anyone watch this. Once Upon a Time in New York : The Birth of Hip Hop, Disco and Punk is a great historical documentary that pretty much embodies all that is BeatLife. Anyone who is a fan of musical progression should watch this. Yes, I do say this about every video I post but there is definitely a reason I post them. My goal is to educate and enlighten the public. Hopefully at least one person will see something here and it will make enough of an impact for that person to change the world. As I always say....Watch & Enjoy!

Good "Old-School" Hip Hop Documentaries - Rhyme & Reason & The Show

It's funny for me to call these 2 films "Old-school" but I guess when they are about the 90's, it is more than 10 years old so that does fit the term by definition. Another interesting point about both of these documentaries is that they received mixed to poor reviews. As someone who was participating in this scene during this time and very much a fan of this music, I thought both were very cool. My friends and I used to watch these when we were in college. I still listen to most of this music today and it doesn't sound "Old-School" to me still. Sometimes I will introduce these artists' to some younger kids who have never heard them before and they come back stoked. They think it's new and they just didn't hear it yet. This is pure Hip Hop....I still don't know what happened to it? Take some time and watch these when you get a chance. This era is the birth place of "The BeatLife", you will enjoy this if you love hip hop. Maybe someone will see this and it will them inspire them to make some new music? Please let me know what you think. In my opinion, Rhyme & Reason was done a little better but The Show is good too. It was done earlier but I have it in parts so it had to do it below. Enjoy!

Happy Thankgiving Charlie Brown

It's funny how certain things will never get old and one of them for me is Charlie Brown Holiday classics. As a child these little animated tales mark a paradigm in my life of innocence. This one in particular is one of my favorites because I love the music ( "Little Birdie") but also because of the underlying messages Charles Schultz is trying to portray about the early1970's. I know these are usually on TV but if you're bored and feeling a little nostalgic, maybe you need to get into the holiday mode, I suggest you take a little while to watch. These are still pretty funny and give you the good feeling we all sometimes lose. Happy Thanksgiving!

I was walking through the Ritz Carlton in Dana Point, Ca yesterday  and I came across a very cool decoration they had in their lobby that made me think of this legendary Southern California band. Being that the Ritz is located just above one of the world's top surf breaks, Salt Creek, they have decorated their lobby with different surf boards. Your entrance is greeted by a 10X Kelly Slater & Andy Irons signed Championship boards but also one particular Al Merrick is very creatively decorated with a mini autobiography of the bassist , Flea of RHCP. It is a brief but comical story of his life written in pen on the complete top side of the board, if you ever are in the area I suggest you stop by to check it out. After reading it and laughing quite a bit, it got me thinking about a band who I have been listening to now for over 20 years. I actually did meet Flea one time at  a Method Man concert at the House of Blues, but that is a story for another time. This band really defines the BeatLife mentality as they have always stayed true to their style making them legends in music and art. I have to admit that I am more of a fan of their earlier music but it is probably because I associate it with a my teenage skateboarding days. So, with my tribute here to one my favorite bands I would like to share with you the 1991 documentary Funky Monks. This is a documentary filming the making of one their most popular and influential albums; Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic. I would say this album is when they started to mellow out on their musical style but definitely not their lifestyle choices, which is evident in this documentary. We all may know that these guys are older and have matured now but watch this movie from almost 20 years ago to see how far they have come. BONES BRIGADE!!!! That's all I really should have to say here but after watching The Dan Patrick Show this morning, the interview with Tony Hawk made me realize that today was the time to post this. Filmed in 1987 , this movie was probably the one that really got me into skateboarding as I was about 10 years old. Powell Peralta was run by another even earlier influence Stacey Peralta, of whom I posted a documentary about last month. So you can see this culture has made a significant contribution to my lifestyle so in turn it will be reflected in the BeatLife culture. I am really excited to show you guys this video, I believe you will enjoy it even if you don't skateboard. The "Old-School" aspect and creativity of the movie is very enjoyable but it will also help you appreciate the progression of the sport. Not to mention, most of these guys( Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero) still skate in their 40's and Tony Hawk...well, do I really need to say anymore? I know that I only post these videos and documentaries but it is the best way I can think of to express what I would like to. Gone But not Forgotten : Peter Tosh

I haven't done much blogging lately due to a small form of writer's block, I do not want to become redundant here. Recently my theme has been finding videos that relate to the "BeatLife" philosophy so I think I will stick with that. In this post I would like to introduce you to an artist who I feel has been shadowed in his genre by one of the most influential artist's of all time, Bob Marley. Peter Tosh was with Bob since the beginning and is responsible for writing many of the songs we know and love today. A very skilled guitarist, Peter was basically the life-blood behind the early Wailer music as his creativity fueled many of the songs they performed. His story is very tragic for such a peaceful human-being but it is a reality for these type of people. I wanted to post the VH1 "Behind the Music" so you can get the basic history behind him if you are not familiar. After that, if you are interested in an actual documentary filmed when he was still alive, there is the Stepping Razor full movie. I highly recommend  both but Stepping Razor is an awesome live music documentary of one of the greatest Reggae artist's of all time.

Tribute to Craziest Skateboarder : Danny Way

Recently there has been a movie on cable that I think you guys should check out if you haven't seen it, X-Games:The Movie. Watching this movie gave me a new appreciation for a skateboarder who has been one of my favorites for a long time, dating back to high school. The thing was, this guy has always been crazy and I was used to it. He has gone big since he was a young teenager but in the X-Games movie, the behind the scenes filming gives you an insight on the attitude of this professional. Danny Way takes "Playing through Pain" to a new level and I felt he deserves a little bit of notice. I wanted to share these videos anyway and what better than to do it in honor of Danny as he has been a creator and mainstay at both of these companies. The First Video, Plan B: Virtual Reality, is the second video done by Plan B back in my high school days, I love this video and company still to this day. In this video, Danny is just a young pro on the team but he is amazing at what he does. After the founder of the company, Mike Ternasky, died in a car accident, the company went under for a while. Recently, Danny Way & Colin McKay have revived the brand and they are going strong again. The Second video here, The DC Video,....Just watch, it's crazy. Danny is also a founder of this company and provides some spectacular skating for a finale to a very cool video. Watch and enjoy!

Artist Spotlight : Teruo Artistry Clothing Line

I have to thank my friend Brian Watters for keeping it real for all these years with his clothing line, Teruo Artistry. Two more great products to come out of U.C.S.B., Brian and his brother, Timothy have been going strong in the hip hop scene for the last 10-15 years and keep the dream alive. The great thing about this clothing line is the ideals behind it which incorporate conscious art and music. Other than being the creator and CEO, Brian is a very experienced hip hop producer and Timothy is the very talented artist of all the pieces you will see, I swear this guy is AMAZING! R.I.P. Tribute to Gregory Isaacs (1951-2010) : Rockers (The Movie)

After a great weekend surfing with my friends up and down the central coast of California, it saddens me to hear the Reggae legend, Gregory Isaacs, has succumbed to lung cancer. Known as the Cool Ruler, Gregory made hits such as Night Nurse, Rumours, and Number One. I am fortunate enough to say I saw him at the Santa Barbara bowl in the late 90's and I will always cherish that. As each of these 'Roots' musicians passes on a little piece of that historical reggae goes with it. For those of you who love reggae, you will understand that the strife that produces this sound is something that can not be replicated. It is now up to the musicians of present and future to recognize this and do their best to incorporate that into their style. I really hope it continues to have an influence on art and style but that is just my opinion. In this tribute I have posted below the full movie, Rockers. Another great thing to come out of the year 1978. This movie really has no plot, it is almost like a reality show where you get  a peek-a-boo idea of what life was like in Trenchtown, Jamaica during the 1970's. Enjoy watching this as you will see cameos by musicans as well as a very good soundtrack. Also below, I posted a small tribute I found on youtube that will give you an idea of Gregory's music if you have never heard before, those of you who have will also enjoy this. Tribute to Favorite Comedian : Dave Chappelle

Those who know me well will also know, like many of you, that Dave Chappelle is my favorite comedian out there. I have liked him since he put out his first stand up on HBO , Killing them Softly. Dave is absolutely hilarious, from his subtle physical comedy and facial expressions to his outlandish impersonations, I can not get enough if this guy. Unfortunately he has taken a break from his profession but he has definitely put enough out there for everyone to enjoy. Other than being funny as hell, Dave seems like a really cool , down-to-earth dude. In the first video below here, you will see the Real Dave Chappelle in his awesome music documentary, Block Party. Dave really fits into the BeatLife philosophy with his obvious love of hip hop and skateboarding. I love the fact that he is truley into the best hip hop out there featuring guys like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, and Fugees and Dead Prez. These are my favorites out there right now and I'm surprised they aren't bigger than they are. I also wanted to show you his first Stand up, Killing them Softly, and if you are really interested in who he is, I also posted Inside the Actors Studio on him , which is also very funny. Enjoy!
