Tribute to Craziest Skateboarder : Danny Way

Recently there has been a movie on cable that I think you guys should check out if you haven't seen it, X-Games:The Movie. Watching this movie gave me a new appreciation for a skateboarder who has been one of my favorites for a long time, dating back to high school. The thing was, this guy has always been crazy and I was used to it. He has gone big since he was a young teenager but in the X-Games movie, the behind the scenes filming gives you an insight on the attitude of this professional. Danny Way takes "Playing through Pain" to a new level and I felt he deserves a little bit of notice. I wanted to share these videos anyway and what better than to do it in honor of Danny as he has been a creator and mainstay at both of these companies. The First Video, Plan B: Virtual Reality, is the second video done by Plan B back in my high school days, I love this video and company still to this day. In this video, Danny is just a young pro on the team but he is amazing at what he does. After the founder of the company, Mike Ternasky, died in a car accident, the company went under for a while. Recently, Danny Way & Colin McKay have revived the brand and they are going strong again. The Second video here, The DC Video,....Just watch, it's crazy. Danny is also a founder of this company and provides some spectacular skating for a finale to a very cool video. Watch and enjoy!

Artist Spotlight : Teruo Artistry Clothing Line

I have to thank my friend Brian Watters for keeping it real for all these years with his clothing line, Teruo Artistry. Two more great products to come out of U.C.S.B., Brian and his brother, Timothy have been going strong in the hip hop scene for the last 10-15 years and keep the dream alive. R.I.P. Tribute to Gregory Isaacs (1951-2010) : Rockers (The Movie)

After a great weekend surfing with my friends up and down the central coast of California, it saddens me to hear the Reggae legend, Gregory Isaacs, has succumbed to lung cancer. Known as the Cool Ruler, Gregory made hits such as Night Nurse, Rumours, and Number One. I am fortunate enough to say I saw him at the Santa Barbara bowl in the late 90's and I will always cherish that. As each of these 'Roots' musicians passes on a little piece of that historical reggae goes with it. For those of you who love reggae, you will understand that the strife that produces this sound is something that can not be replicated. It is now up to the musicians of present and future to recognize this and do their best to incorporate that into their style. I really hope it continues to have an influence on art and style but that is just my opinion. In this tribute I have posted below the full movie, Rockers. Another great thing to come out of the year 1978. This movie really has no plot, it is almost like a reality show where you get  a peek-a-boo idea of what life was like in Trenchtown, Jamaica during the 1970's. Enjoy watching this as you will see cameos by musicans as well as a very good soundtrack. Also below, I posted a small tribute I found on youtube that will give you an idea of Gregory's music if you have never heard before, those of you who have will also enjoy this. Tribute to Favorite Comedian : Dave Chappelle

Those who know me well will also know, like many of you, that Dave Chappelle is my favorite comedian out there. I have liked him since he put out his first stand up on HBO , Killing them Softly. Dave is absolutely hilarious, from his subtle physical comedy and facial expressions to his outlandish impersonations, I can not get enough if this guy. Unfortunately he has taken a break from his profession but he has definitely put enough out there for everyone to enjoy. Other than being funny as hell, Dave seems like a really cool , down-to-earth dude. In the first video below here, you will see the Real Dave Chappelle in his awesome music documentary, Block Party. Dave really fits into the BeatLife philosophy with his obvious love of hip hop and skateboarding. I love the fact that he is truley into the best hip hop out there featuring guys like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, and Fugees and Dead Prez. These are my favorites out there right now and I'm surprised they aren't bigger than they are. The Beginning of Skateboarding : Dogtown & Z Boys

It would be hard for me to do a complete review of this documentary because I could write about it for days. An award winning film by one of it's stars, Stacy Peralta, this brings me back to my very early childhood. Growing up in "Socal" with a few older guys who did skate pretty hard core, skaters like Tony Alva, Jay Adams and Stacy Peralta were iconic. The rock star status of professional skateboarding wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for these guys. They catapulted the career of Tony Hawk who is clearly the most popular skater in the world. I recommend watching this movie, if you have ties that that era, it will definitely bring you back. The soundtrack is awesome too. This also was the basis for the movie now out on DVD The Lords of Dogtown, if you haven't seen that movie, I highly recommend that as well.

30 for 30 : Run Ricky Run - Great ESPN documentary on Ricky Williams

Some of you may not know this but I HATE THE MIAMI DOLPHINS! I am a Patriots fan. Although, one of my favorite players to ever play is Ricky Williams. Even before all his problems, I liked him as a player and I never thought negatively about the guy when he needed to discover himself. Maybe it's because we do have similar views and that's why I wanted to post this documentary. Ricky never got a fair shake and I'm really glad this film maker was there to record this process. Ricky is an artistic, pacifist in a football player's body. He's probably one of the most intelligent football players out there and just because he chose to smoke weed, the media decided to completely try and excommunicate the guy. Well I would like to say I never gave up on him and now look, he's back and a very good running back in the NFL. I would not be surprised if he makes it into the Hall of Fame. Watch this documentary, it definitely fit's into the BeatLife philosophy, it made me definitely respect Ricky Williams a lot more.

Great Snowboarding Video:Travis Rice - That's it, That's all

Good snowboarding movies are pretty difficult to find on the internet but this film is awesome! One of the best snowboarders in the World is featured here, Travis Rice, and he will not disappoint. I am going to try and get some older videos that influenced my boarding career but for right now this one should entertain you. I think snowboarding is another lifestyle that fits into the BeatLife category because it is a sport that you play against yourself , however , it is a culture and a lifestyle choice. Snowboarders walk to the beat of their own drummers and these guys here are no different. If you want to see a really well made movie with some incredible, acrobatic snowboarding then just watch this movie and enjoy! Please feel free to leave comments.

Five Summer Stories

As you can tell I have been posting many different movies, documentaries and videos. Specifically, board sports and music but there will always be many varied aspects of pop culture mixed in. In the early stages here, I'm going to start off with some good old school content and work my way up to the future. If you follow this blog regularly, then you will receive a great education. This is my first surf movie/ video I am posting and there will be many more to come. Filmed in the early 1970's, Five Summer Stories , features a classic style of surfing showcasing surfers such as Gerry Lopez, Eddie Aikau, Shaun Tomson, Buttons, Peter Townend with small cameos by Duke Kahanamoku and Laird Hamilton at 10 yrs old. There is also a great section from the very early days of skateboarding and Killer Dana before the Harbor. Five Summer Stories is still considered one of the best surf movies of all time. 2 Tone Documentaries - Dance Craze & Rudies Come Home

Growing up, this was one of my most favorite type of music. Most people don't know this about me but for much of my childhood, my sister and I, had Swedish Au pairs who took care of us while our parents worked. My mom was a flight attendant so she would be gone for a few days, my father needed someone to help with the kids while he worked. These women actually had a huge influence on my life, especially in music. Being that they were European and it was the 80's, I was exposed to punk & ska at at a very early age. Groups such as The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Specials & Selector all became favorites of mine yet not too many of my friends had even heard of those bands yet. This actually carried on throughout my life today and I believe it is the reason why my musical tastes are so eclectic. I also believe this type of music has had an underlying tone to most music today and if you asked many talented artist's out there, they would say these bands held a major influence in their musical development. Watch this movie and few clips here if you are interested in musical fusion, the whole idea behind the 2-tone movement was to blend black & white culture and put an end to racism. At this time in history, this was something that wasn't done too much in music.

Using Buddhism to fuse Eastern & Western Culture - Podcasts

I always have wished I applied myself a little bit more in college than I did but I do not have too many regrets. In the classes that I was really interested in and stimulated by, I actually did do pretty well. One in particular was a class I took my senior year called Sleeping, Dreaming & Dying in Tibetan Buddhism. Clearly this class was the most interesting class I took while in school and by the look of most people who were in it with me, I would bet they would say the same thing. Just to give you and example, It was a Monday, Wednesday, Friday class at 5pm and I don't know many U.C.S.B. students who go to class on Friday at 5pm and this one was always full. The reason for this is because the professor is probably the most amazing professor anyone has ever had. I consider this man the most intelligent lecturer I have ever heard and I have personally heard over educated professionals give him the same credit. I actually heard a rumor that a faculty member was fired for criticizing this man but that is all hearsay. I want to promote his podcast for the Santa Barbara Institute of Consciousness Studies for anyone out there who is interested in Buddhism, Spirituality or just another view on Life in general. This is Living the BeatLife and I will occasionally include some 'Life" aspects as options for people to study and possibly improve their own lives. B. Alan Wallace (born 1950) is an American author, translator, teacher, researcher, interpreter, and Buddhist practitioner interested in the intersections of consciousness studies and scientific disciplines such as psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and physics. He endeavors to chart relationships and commonalities between Eastern and Western scientific, philosophical, and contemplative modes of inquiry.
Since 1976, Wallace has taught Buddhism, philosophy, and meditation in Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia. Wallace grew up in America and Switzerland but left college after three years to study Buddhism in India. He has served as interpreter for many Buddhist contemplatives and scholars, including the Dalai Lama. He is a prolific author of numerous books and essays and has translated dozens of Sanskrit and Tibetan texts into English. Wallace has a bachelor's degree in physics and philosophy of science from Amherst College and a Ph.D. in religious studies from Stanford. He also founded and is President of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies. In 2010 Wallace became the Director and Chairman of the Phuket International Academy Mind Centre, which provides a blend of contemporary psychology and neuroscience alongside ancient Asian contemplative practices. He is currently leading two 8-week, residential, intensive meditation retreats there each year, which are open to all who are interested in developing exceptional mental balance and well-being. In addition, together with Paul Ekman he is leading a 6-week course to train instructors in "Cultivating Emotional Balance," a 42-hour program developed by Dr. Wallace and Dr. Ekman, which was scientifically studied at the University of California, San Francisco. All these retreats and courses are organized in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Institute. His life's work focuses on a deep engagement between Buddhist philosophical and contemplative inquiry and modern science and philosophy, with a special emphasis on exploring the nature and potentials of the mind in a radically empirical manner, as free as possible from the dogmas of religion and materialism.

Do you Love Hip Hop? Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme

Some of you out there have seen or even own this, but for the others out there that love hip hop and have not seen this, I am about to drop some knowledge on your a$$. Well, not me actually but this documentary is probably the best on the subject of true underground hip hop. This is what it's all about, and in time will make it's way back to the top of pop culture. Hip Hop is my most favorite genre of music but my version and your version are probably pretty different, that is the beauty of the music. The word 'Freestyle' can define many musical aspects that are free of style. Can't get any better than that when it comes to American music, it is just the most modern form of jazz. If you are interested in hip hop music at all, watch this documentary. Features groups such as The Roots, Freestyle Fellowship, Jurassic 5 , Supernatural and many more.
